ADVERTISEMENTS
About 3,000 Oregonians will lose their emergency unemployment benefits this week as state money for the extended program runs out.
Oregon’s Employment Department says those people will get their final checks this week from the $19 million program authorized in February by the Legislature.
Lawmakers created the emergency benefits during their special session to provide unemployment insurance payments to unemployed workers who had exhausted all other available extensions. The extension was intended to bridge the gap until the summer months when the job market generally picks up.
Since the beginning of 2010, more than 14,000 people have exhausted all state and federal unemployment insurance benefits, sometimes covering more than two years on unemployment.
Now, people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own can be eligible for up to 26 weeks of benefits through regular unemployment insurance, and up to 20 weeks of extended benefits.
A third extension program, federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation, ended May 29. The U.S. Senate left for the Fourth of July holiday recess without extending that program, which had been approved by the House.
The Oinkers from the Party of NO, really do not give a darn about anyone that works for a living, or now tries to work to pay mortgages and feed their families. A sad bunch of people the Oinkers are. Talk to them in November.

Me neither.... The Republicans have lost my vote forever. I'm a unemployed 53 yr old who has always worked. Now I'm unemployed since Feb of 08, no money coming in. My daughter's has been helping me, but they can't keep going much longer. One has a job and one is about to lose her benefits too! There has to be an ending in sight somewhere.... How dare they take long vacations at this time of need in our country. Everyone else only gets the 4th off, not them! It's time for these people to go!! All they do is to stuff money in their pockets from lobbists. They are selling their vote to the highest bidder. Not working on behalf of the people who voted them into office.

This problem was created by our Elected officals and the bankers by approving such as loans for morgages that people can not afford as well as loans on cars that were priced to high. even credit cards to those who can not afford to use them. If you run up a bill or barrow the money then you should pay it back. You should be out there looking for work or create a job.
Its not hard to create a job. I know with out a dought that I can create a small company that could employ well over ten million people accross the U.S. these would be green jobs too. But remember its our elected officals whos job it was to make sure that things do not fail.

Mr. Starwick - I understand where you are coming from. I have not recieved a pay check since Jan 2009 to date. I will say though, as an emplpoyer, giving benefits directly to folks like you will never solve the problems we are experianceing today. In fact, it's what is slwoing the recovery proccess. In order for you to become gainfully employeed once again, businesses like mine need capital. With said capital, I can provide two new jobs in the next 6 months. Further, tax increases in the state of Oregon futher already record unemployment.
The fact is, the issue is not be directly addressed. We need to get credit flowing from banks not governemnt in order to get this economy flowing again. Until this happens, we will never be able to return to our once prosperous economy. Furthermore, Mr. Obama has done just as much damage as the Repbulicans ever did. While I agree the republicans are blocking just about everything they can, they are not the root problem.
Disclaimer: I apologize for any spelling errors.

Joe and the rest of you liberal thinkers,
Jobs and prosperity come from freedom and free markets. This is Econ 101.
The current administration has socialized our economy by having government provide goods and services. Government is one of the least efficient ways of providing goods and services.
It creates a dependent social class.
This is why entitlements have increased to record levels during the current administration.
Is this what we want, to become a socialist society dependent on the government. This is unsustainable because eventually the receivers overburden the providers.
It's funny that people talk about no jobs available. I have two kids now out of high school. It took my son 1 week to find a job and 2 days for my daughter.
The issue isn't democrat versus republican. It is liberal versus conservative.
Liberalism is leading us in the wrong direction creating a population dependent on the government.

Tiff,
While i agree that there are alot of jobs available-not all of us are living at home with our parents and need more than $6-$8 per hour to support a family of 5. We currently have a goverment that is making it hard for small business to survive-which is what will help the economy recover. They have put so many stupid laws in place to "punish" the good businesses and they reward the bad one's(i.e.-AIG bailout). Until we change the way our goverment operates we are stuck with what the majority voted for. Remember when the next election comes that we get what we vote for(and i didn't vote for Obama) as a majority and hopefully we can do better next time......

I'd love to see all of the people who claimed they were going to "never vote for a Republican again" to come back on and list ALL of the Republicans they voted for in the past.
My guess is that none of them will because none of them ever have voted for a Republican. I can tell this because the people who start out by blaming everyone and everything BUT THEMSELVES for their problems are generally lifelong committed DEMOCRATS!
Democrats have been running the state of Oregon ever since I came here in '85.
Does anyone think that these same people will "never vote for a Democrat running for State office because all of Oregon's problems are the fault of the Democrats??"
I doubt it.
I think that these same people who are eager to blame Republicans nationally give hardly a thought to the responsibility the Democrats have for the condition of Oregon's economy.

Richard Mason:
You nailed it, sir.
I believe Obama even blamed GWB for the recent oil spill in the Gulf. That's what you get with a non-leader; no action after day 84+, just re-action.
Likewise, in between genuflects to B.O., faithful non-thinking Dems blame Reagan, Bush, and any GOP member when liberal policies, corruption (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, AIG, or Porkulus/ObamaCare bribes, anyone?) and agendas (50% more unemployment via illegal hiring/enforcement reductions) have ALL helped greatly in putting us where we are.
As for spending in the last 18 months and coming INCREASED taxes in 2011, B.O. is making George W. Bush look like Clark Howard.
The emperor's new clothes are a bit drafty.
Remember in November: evict the Congress and statehouse Dems and RINOs!

Re: Thousands lose state emergency unemployment benefits
I am a 55 year old printer, and a United States Jaycee Ambassador #2361. I will never vote republican ever again. In the last two years I have survived two plant closers and was laid off from the third job in November 2009. This has been in three western states. My unemployment benefits have run out and I will be homeless at the end of July. If you are in the same situation I think you should respond the same way. DON'T EVER VOTE REPUBLICAN AGAIN. This is not the democrats fault. They took over a very broken economy. They are trying fix it but the republicans are preventing this from happening.
