Lady Bowmen hope to have the right mix

Softball: Sherwood hopes youth, talent and leadership will take it to the playoffs

SHERWOOD — The Sherwood High School softball team hopes it has the right combination.

That combination includes strong senior leadership, solid pitching, talented young players and some smarts.

The Lady Bowmen are hoping all of those factors will help them garner a Class 5A state playoff bid this season.

“The goal for us will be getting to the state playoffs,” said Sherwood coach Dave Durfee, adding that another goal is to place in the top 10 in the Class 5A softball academic all-state standings again this year. “This is a great bunch of kids.”

Sherwood, which finished fourth in the Northwest Oregon Conference standings at 10-11 while having an overall record of 13-15 a year ago, has only two seniors this year in Jamie Bradshaw and Ashley Scott.

“We’re getting good leadership from our seniors,” Durfee said.

Scott will play at third base this season for the Lady Bowmen and Bradshaw will play in right field.

The Lady Bowmen look to boast a double threat at pitcher with junior Hannah Muller and sophomore Michelle Oenning.

“I think they’re both going to do real well,” Durfee said.

Oenning, who could also see time in the infield, was an honorable mention all-league pick last year as an infielder.

Sophomore Kealy Walker and freshman Raegen Musselman will both see time at catcher.
