GRANTS PASS – It just doesn’t seem to matter to the Sherwood High School football team.
It doesn’t matter to the Bowmen if they’re at home. It doesn’t matter if they have to take a long, long road trip.
It doesn’t matter if they are taking on the two-time Class 5A state champion. And, as Grants Pass found out, it doesn’t matter to them if they move up a level to take on a Class 6A opponent.
Early in the 2009 season, no matter the situation, Sherwood seems to be determined to dominate.
With that in mind, the Bowmen made the long trip to Grants Pass and came away with a 35-18 win over the Class 6A Cavemen in a non-league game played Friday at Grants Pass High School.
“That was a great win for us,” Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence said. “It was a lot of fun. It was good to go down to their place and get a win against a good 6A team.”
With the victory, Sherwood, the No. 1 team in the Class 5A rankings, improved to 2-0 on the season. Grants Pass moved to 1-1 with the setback.
Grants Pass, in Friday’s game, put together a strong offensive drive in front of its home crowd to start the contest.
But the Cavemen had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Corey Ely and a 3-0 lead.
“We took over from there,” Lawrence said.
Yes, the Bowmen did – in a big way.
Sophomore running back Steven Long gave Sherwood a 7-3 lead when he scored on an 11-yard run.
Later in the first quarter, junior fullback Michael Balfour plowed his way into the end zone from six yards out to up the Bowmen advantage to 14-3.
