ADVERTISEMENTS
This past high school sports spring season could go by many monikers.
It could be called, say, “Super soaker spring.”
Or “Three-month rain delay.”
Or “Spring time — weather permitting.”
Or… well, you get the idea.
And, while all of those nicknames are fitting and deserved, there’s another one I like even better.
For the local area, at least, it was the “Spring of champions.”
All four of the local high schools — Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood and Horizon Christian — had at least one individual and/or team state champion during the 2010 spring season.
That made for a very busy season, but also a very fun season.
Here’s a quick look back at the state champions of the spring.
Telles, a Tualatin High School senior, won the first local state championship of the spring season as she claimed individual medalist honors at the Class 6A girls golf state tournament, held in mid May at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.
For Telles, it was a state championship four years in the making.
She placed third at the state tournament as a freshman, tied for second as a sophomore and placed sixth last year as a Timberwolf junior.
After all that, Telles was determined to finish her high school golf career with a championship. But that was a goal she didn’t want to say out loud.
“I want to place top,” was her answer during the season when asked what her goal was.
But, when she played the final round of the state tournament at Quail Valley, the determined look on her face showed that she wasn’t going to be denied.
It all came down to her last shot on the last hole of the day. Her ball set about eight feet away from the cup as she lined up a potential birdie putt that she knew would give her the title. Her putt was true and dropped to the bottom of the cup.
Telles did a quick, subtle fist pump and the determined look on her face was replaced by a smile — a championship smile.
Horizon Christian is quickly becoming the little school that could.
Coming off a winter season that saw the Hawks claim the Class 3A boys basketball state championship, the Horizon Christian boys track and field team followed up with what was a much-more unlikely state championship.
