VANCOUVER, Wash. — A group of area players helped the NW Fireballs Gold softball team earn a chance to play for a national championship.
The Fireballs Gold squad, which includes Taeler McGinnis, Hannah Muller, Raegan Musselman and Michelle Oenning from Sherwood High School and Shelby Burke from Tualatin High School, will be competing in the 2010 ASA Gold Nationals, a 64-team event which will be held Aug. 1-7 in Marietta, Ga.
The Fireballs earned their berth at the national event at the Western Territory Tournament, held Friday through Sunday in Vancouver, Wash. That tournament featured 37 teams from Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and California.
In their first game at the Vancouver tourney, the Fireballs beat the California Chaos 2-1.
Maddy Dunn picked up a complete-game pitching victory and Burke had a pair of hits to help pace the offense.
Ashley Edwards, Kayleen Gary, Dunn and Erin Nilles also had hits in the win.
